NEWBERG, Ore. --- George Fox won its first match of the day, 9-0, and was nearly perfect against Willamette in a Northwest Conference matchup before hosting No. 36 Concordia-Texas to finish a home doubleheader. The Bruins were able to mix up their lineups to give everyone court time in a pair of wins to cap the weekend.
Match One
Fox swept its match against Willamette to start the day with an almost-flawless win against the Bearcats. Rox Rogers and Luis Rojas played up at no. 1 doubles and won, 8-2, while Alle Banna and Jackson Whittaker paired to sweep, 8-0, at no. 2 doubles. Ryan Olson and Hunter Fujimori finished the doubles sweep with an 8-1 finish on court three.
In singles, the Bruins finished with six perfect 6-0, 6-0 sweeps to race through the first match of the day in short order. Will Leach won on court one, Luke Lemaitre collected a win on court two, Olson played up and won on court three, Banna earned a sweep on court four, and Fujimori and Whittaker won on courts five and six, respectively.
Match Two
Fox took on no. 36 Concordia-Texas and achieved a similar result to its early morning action against the Bearcats with another 9-0 team sweep.
Leach and Lemaitre took down the Tornados' no. 1 doubles tandem, 8-1, and Olson played with Rogers on court two in an 8-6 victory. Camden Camacho and Vahag Pashayan won, 8-1, on court three to sweep doubles.Â
In singles, Leach worked his way through the Tornados' no. 1 with a 6-3, 6-0 final and Lemaitre won 6-1, 6-2 on court two. Rogers also won swiftly on court three, 6-1, 6-0, and Rojas was able to notch a 6-1, 6-2 victory in short order. Pashayan matched Rogers with a 6-1. 6-0 win on the fifth court and Camacho capped the match with a 6-3, 6-1 win at no. 6 singles.
Coach's Thoughts
"We got off on the right foot, energy-wise, against Texas-Concordia, and doubles really set the tone for the matches," said coach Jeff Cero. "Overall, it was a great way to finish a long weekend of tennis. Now it's on to play some important matches down in California, and to build on some important things as a team we've been working towards."
What It Means
The Bruins are 7-1 and have beaten two nationally ranked opponents on back-to-back days, while Willamette drops to 0-4 and CU-Texas falls to 6-2 overall.
