TACOMA, Wash. --- George Fox lacrosse won its 2022 Northwest Conference opener on the road after chopping down the Puget Sound Loggers, 16-6, on Wednesday, Mar. 2.
How It Happened
The first quarter was tightly contested by both teams and each took the first 15 minutes to settle in. Fox was able to open up a 3-0 lead with scores from Marena Tharpe and Kyra Barnes, but the Loggers were able to answer back by the end of the quarter and both offenses struggled to execute and combined to make nine turnovers in the period.
Fox got rolling with five goals in the second quarter on just six shots as a team, a testament to their efficient shot-hunting approach. Lyla Roy and Carleigh DeLapp each joined their teammates on the scoresheet with a goal in the second quarter and Barnes netted back-to-back scores to close the half with a hat trick and an 8-3 Bruin lead.
The second half was a repeat of the first for Fox with three goals in the third and five in the fourth quarter. Emma Webb took over in goal from Ella Rand to start the second half, and Fox supported each keeper with eight goals per half. Olivia Geyling netted two in the third, Barnes added her fourth of the game, and Fox cruised into the fourth quarter with a comfortable 11-4 lead.Â
Andrea Garcia-Milla kicked off the fourth with a goal and then Barnes, Geyling, and DeLapp finished it off with four more goals to turn on the running clock with a 16-6 lead in the last four minutes. That score held through the final horn as Fox picked up another win to start the season.
Top Performers
Barnes netted six goals for a double hat trick, Geyling scored three goals and snared four ground balls, and Maxine Parkin led all players with three forced turnovers and tied Geyling with four ground balls. Webb led the way for all keepers in the contest with six saves, including multiple free position stops.
