Spokane, Washington – George Fox baseball won its Northwest Conference series against Whitworth after taking the Sunday game with a final score of 5-3.
How it happened
The Bruins put Ben Wills on the mound and got eight innings of work out of the sophomore before turning to Andrew Sutherland to close the game with one shutdown inning.
After two scoreless frames, George Fox patiently outwaited the Whitworth starter to load the bases in the third inning before Brandon King wore a pitch for an RBI. A fielders' choice for Noah Meffert put King out at second, but plated the second run for Fox in the inning to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead early in the ball game.
The Bruins turned defense into offense an inning later, first turning an inning-ending double play in the fourth before getting a two-RBI double from Meffert to make it 4-0 Fox.
The Pirates put up three straight runs to make a game of it late, but another Meffert double in the seventh turned into an insurance run after the Pirates' third baseman threw the ball away trying to get Spencer Roos at first.
Sutherland's effort in the ninth earned him a save, and Fox put another series win on its 2022 ledger with the 5-3 final.
