NEWBERG, Ore. --- George Fox kicked off its 2022 Northwest Conference schedule with a sweeping win against Whitworth, 9-0, at home on Saturday, Mar. 5.
How It Happened
The Bruins cruised through doubles in just over a half-hour to start with a 3-0 lead, as the Bruins' doubles pairings combined to win 8-0, 8-1, and 8-1. Coach Jeff Cero scrambled his doubles lineup to get more playing time for his roster and pushed the duo of Camden Camacho and Vahag Pashayan to no. 2, opening up space for Alle Banna and Jackson Whitaker to take on Whitworth's third pairing.
In singles, four the Bruins' wins came in 6-0, 6-0 sweeps. Will Leach, Luke Lemaitre, Banna, and Hunter Fujimori each came away with perfect games against the Pirates, and the rest of the Bruins' lineups made short work of their matchups as well.
Luis Rojas played up and took on the Pirates' no. 3 singles player in a 6-0, 6-3 win, and Pashayan was almost flawless on the scoresheet at no. 4 with a 6-0, 6-1 final.
Coach's Thoughts
"This was a good way to kick off our NWC schedule and I felt the guys had great energy from the first ball," coach Cero said afterward. "We're looking forward to Whitman tomorrow."
What It Means
Fox improves to 3-1 overall and is 1-0 to start its NWC schedule, while the Pirates find themselves at 0-9 and 0-2 in conference this season.
Up Next
Fox hosts traditional NWC power Whitman to close its first NWC weekend on Sunday at the Bruins' Multi-Use Facility. Whitman also defeated the Pirates, 8-1, on Mar. 4, so it should be a competitive matchup to watch.Â
