Fox Splits With Lutes In Home Opener

NEWBERG, Ore. — The George Fox softball team split a conference doubleheader with Pacific Lutheran on Saturday for the Bruins' home opener on Saturday. The Bruins fell 2-1 in game one before turning things up offensively in game two with a 6-4 victory.

Game 1

The opening tilt of the doubleheader was a pitcher's dual with both squads putting their aces out first. Pacific Lutheran earned the win with a two-run homer off of Ashley Davis that made for the final margin of 2-1. George Fox's Kamryn Potter had a solo homer in the loss.

Game 2

The Bruins bats returned to usual form in game two to carry George Fox to a 6-4 victory. Sharon Tomei's three-run blast to center field in the first inning put the Bruins ahead 3-0 early on. Potter hit a two-run double in the second inning and the Bruins were up 5-0 and never ceded the lead after that. Davis came on in the sixth inning and earned the save while Emma Eastman earned the win for the Bruins.

Top Performers

Potter had two hits and a pair of runs batted in in game two to go along with the game one homer for a strong day at the plate. Katie Ladd had a strong performance defensively with four put-outs in left field in each game. Tomei's home run in game two may have been the highlight of the day as it cleared the straight away center field fence with ease.

Coach's Thoughts

"We know that every game now is going to be tough; we competed well in both games and threw well in both," coach Jessica Hollen said after the doubleheader. "I'm happy with how we pitched and performed. Tomorrow we come back and try to take two and hopefully we win the series, because every weekend is going to be tough and that's what makes it fun."

What It Means

The Bruins are now 7-5 on the season and 2-2 in NWC play while the Lutes move to 12-6 overall and 4-2 in NWC action.

Up Next

The Bruins and Lutes will look to settle the score on the series with a doubleheader on Sunday. Game one first pitch is scheduled for 11:00 am.
