NEWBERG, Ore. --- George Fox notched its first Northwest Conference series win on Sunday, Mar. 6, after scoring 19 runs against the Lutes in Newberg. Fox won the opener in just under 90 minutes via walkoff, 9-1, and came from behind to win 10-5 in game two and clinch the series.
Game One
Ashley Davis added another complete-game win to her season ledger with five innings of one-run softball, striking out two and scattering three hits across her outing.
It was all Fox all the way in game one as they kept the Lutes off-balance and knocked their starter out of the game after just one and a third. Fox loaded the bases to start the second frame after Sharon Tomei wore a pitch and Mikaelie Sullivan and Sydney Sandifer drew walks. A passed ball allowed all three runners to advance and spoiled Katie Ladd's chance of a grand slam, as the senior took the following pitch out to dead center for a 4-0 lead. Emma Classen and Kamryn Potter also hit solo shots in the inning to grab a 6-0 lead after two innings.
PLU plated one in the third, but Fox put up two more in the fourth. Potter singled into right center before Claire Fountain hit the Bruins' fourth home run of the game for an 8-1 lead.
Fox walked it off in the fifth with a 9-1 final. With two out in the inning, coach Jessica Hollen turned to Ashley Sansoni for a pinch-hit opportunity. In her first at-bat at Morse Athletic Field, the freshman took the first pitch she saw out of the yard for the 9-1 final.
Game Two
The Bruins had to test their mental toughness in game two, but they were able to battle back in the end for the win.
Kimberly Pulido plated the first run of the game after scoring on a wild pitch, but PLU took a 3-1 lead after the top of the second. The Bruins got all three runs back in the bottom half of the second with a sacrifice fly into foul territory and a two-run shot from Potter to center field, but the Lutes got back in front with two runs in the third.
After three scoreless innings, Fox's offense got back on track with six runs in the sixth for a 10-5 lead that the Bruins never surrendered. Pulido and Tomei each doubled while Potter, Fountain, and Ladd all homered to drive in the six runs for the 10-5 final.
Davis worked two innings of relief and was able to come away as the winning arm after pitching two scoreless frames out of the bullpen.
Top Performances
Davis worked seven innings in all and got both wins on the day in the circle. Potter was unstoppable with three homers and five RBI, and Sansoni added the special cherry on top with her walk-off pinch hit in game one.
