TACOMA, Wash. --- No. 16 George Fox finished off a second undefeated Northwest Conference season with an 8-1 win over Pacific Lutheran on Saturday, Apr. 16, on the Lutes' home courts.
How It Happened
Coach Jeff Cero sat his top doubles squad and moved Vahag Pashayan and Cameron Camacho up to the first court - the duo fought well but fell, 8-3, against the Lutes' top tandem. That was the only PLU victory of the afternoon, however, as Fox got a clean 8-0 win on court two from Rox Rogers and Ryan Olson, and an 8-4 win at no. 3 doubles by Hunter Fujimori and Alle Banna.
In singles, Will Leach won 6-2, 7-5 over the Lutes' no. 1 and Luke Lemaitre swept the Lutes' no. 2 player, 6-0, 6-0, to speed the match along. Camacho played up at court four and also got a clean sweep, while Pashayan played up at no. 3 and won, 6-1, 6-0, in a near-perfect match. Fujimori won, 6-1, 6-1, on court five and Jackson Whittaker won 6-3, 6-2 to cap the match on court six.
Coach's Thoughts
"I'm really proud of the guys for accomplishing another historic milestone for the program with back-to-back [undefeated] conference championships," coach Cero said afterward. "They know that the job is far from over and we're looking forward to seeing Pacific, Whitman, and Lewis & Clark in our house next weekend."
What It Means
As coach Cero mentioned, the Bruins have won two consecutive regular season conference titles and own a 22-0 regular-season NWC streak, dating back to Apr. 6, 2019 - their last conference loss was on Mar. 16, 2019. Fox has also earned the top seed and the rights to host the 2022 NWC tournament next weekend.
Up Next
The Bruins face four-seed Lewis & Clark on Saturday, Apr. 23, in a rematch of a 9-0 Fox sweep on the Pios' courts earlier this month.
