Bruins Set To Host NWC Men's Tennis Tourney

4/20/2022 11:30:00 AM

NEWBERG, Ore. --- The No. 16 George Fox men's tennis team is set to host the 2022 Northwest Conference Tournament for the second time in as many seasons after finishing with an undefeated 8-0 conference record.

The Bruins were picked by the conference coaches to repeat as champions in the 2022 preseason poll, and they made good on that prediction in dominant fashion. For the second year in a row, the Bruins defeated all comers in conference play and have an active 22-0 streak against NWC teams in the regular season. They notched six sweeping 9-0 wins and only surrendered four team points all year to conference foes.

Fox's national ITA ranking of no. 16 is the highest of any NWC team in the latest poll and the Bruins boast the most individual rankings for singles and doubles players in the ITA West Region as well. Led by Will Leach (no. 8), Luke Lemaitre (no. 12), and Rox Rogers (no. 24), the Bruins have a formidable lineup on the singles courts this season, and they also have the no. 3 duo in the West regions for doubles with the pairing of Leach and Lemaitre.

The field for the 2022 NWC Tournament is the exact replica of the 2021 field, both in terms of teams and seeding. Led by an 8-0 Fox squad, this field also features 7-1 Pacific (Ore.), 6-2 Whitman, and 5-3 Lewis & Clark.

Pacific is the only other nationally ranked team in the field at no. 37, and Whitman is ranked regionally at no. 15. The Boxers have two ranked singles players and a ranked doubles pairing to challenge Fox.

Fox will face fourth-seeded Lewis & Clark to open the tournament on Saturday, Apr. 23, with first ball scheduled for 10:00 am. Fox handled that regular-season matchup well with one of its six sweeping 9-0 wins.

Second-seeded Pacific will face third-seeded Whitman later that day at 2:00 pm. The regular-season meeting between those two went the Boxers' way in a 7-2 final on Apr. 17.

The winners of each first-to-five match on Saturday will face off on Sunday, Apr. 24, at noon in the Bruins' Multi-Use Facility.
