NEWBERG, Ore. --- George Fox capped its fifth consecutive undefeated Northwest Conference championship season with a 22-7 victory over the Whitman Blues while setting or tying multiple single-game records for goals and assists at Fox.
How It Happened
Carleigh DeLapp scored the game's opening goal off of an assist from Andrea Garcia-Milla to set the tone for what would become a historic night for both players. Whitman answered with two quick strikes and took a rare lead over Fox, but Lyla Roy tied it back up with an unassisted goal after winning the draw and charged to the net for a 2-2 tie.
The Garcia-Milla to DeLapp connection kept returning dividends all night as the tandem worked their way to a 9-3 lead by the end of the first quarter. Garcia-Milla had five assists and a goal by the end of the first, and Fox charged onward to a 16-3 lead at the half.
Fox worked its way out to a 19-4 lead by the end of the third quarter as Garcia-Milla and DeLapp kept up their charge, and with 4:53 left in third quarter DeLapp scored her eighth of the night, tying the Bruins' single-game goals record. Garcia-Milla notched a new milestone of her own with six minutes left in the fourth quarter, feeding Kyra Barnes for Barnes' third goal of the night and her 10th assist of the evening - a new single-game record for the Bruins.
Coach's Thoughts
"We are so appreciative to all the families, friends and fans that have supported us all season long," coach Katie Brand said. "Tonight's game was a great way to end a remarkable season with an incredible team. Jenna and I are so proud of our team and the way they fought this year both on and off the field. Headed into post season we are excited and hungry for what's to come."
Top Performances
Garcia-Milla tallied 11 points with her school-record 10 assists and a goal - the 11 points are also the most in a single game for any NWC player this year. DeLapp's eight goals tied the school record set by Miranda Edwords in 2017, and on defense Peyton Bergren caused four turnovers and scooped up three ground balls.
What It Means
Fox is 17-0 with a 12-0 record against conference opponents to finish the regular season, while Whitman finishes the year in fifth with a 4-8 NWC record and a 5-10 overall record. The win is now the 54th consecutive against NWC schools in a streak that dates back to the 2016 season as the Bruins captured their fifth straight undefeated conference championship crown, and their sixth straight NWC title. It also marks the 25th victory at Austin Sports Complex for the 2022 senior class.
