CLAREMONT, Calif. --- No. 25 George Fox men's tennis made its second appearance in the NCAA postseason with another pilgrimage to Southern California and fell, 5-1, in a matchup against the No. 11 Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens.
How It Happened
Fox battled in doubles against some strong opponents, facing the no. 2 tandem in the West. Will Leach and Luke Lemaitre forced a tiebreak with an 8-7 battle, but the Sagehens' tandem prevailed with an 8-6 tiebreak victory.
Rox Rogers paired with Ryan Olson and they also forced a tiebreak at no. 2 doubles, but again the Sagehens were able to overcome the Bruins' efforts with an 8-7 (7-2) win.
Camden Camacho and Vahag Pashayan were able to avoid a clean sweep in doubles after outdueling the Sagehens' no. 3 tandem with an 8-6 final.
With a 2-1 lead after doubles, Pomona-Pitzer was able to outrace the Bruins' singles players to a clinching 5-1 final after wins on courts one, four, and five. Lemaitre led with a set-one win on court two at the halt, Rogers was midway through a tiebreak third set, and Camacho led on court six after winning a marathon first set 7-6 (9-7).
Coach's Thoughts
"This was a tough finish to our season today," Coach Jeff Cero said. "The doubles were really the swing of the match; we had so many chances and didn't capitalize on them, unfortunately. I am really proud of this team and everything they fought for. This was an early finish, but a great year."
What It Means
Fox ends its second NCAA postseason appearance under coach Cero with a second-round defeat, but the Bruins notched their second straight NCAA tourney appearance, two more NWC titles - regular and tournament - and end their 2022 campaign with a 16-6 overall record.
