ORLANDO — The 2021-22 men's tennis is officially in the books for the Bruins after the conclusion of the 2022 NCAA Individual Championships today at the USTA National Campus.
How It Happened
Will Leach and Luke Lemaitre were each invited to participate in the individual championships and the day began with singles play at 8:45 am ET.
Leach, the no. 7 singles player in the ITA West region, drew Peter Anker from Wesleyan (Conn.), the No. 21 team in the latest ITA rankings. Anker is also in his senior year and is ranked sixth in the Northeast region this season by the ITA.
Anker won the spin and chose to receive at the start of the match before pushing past Leach in the first set, 6-0. Leach was able to push Anker hardest in games three, five, and six but Anker still prevailed for the early lead. In the second set Leach was able to win two games and also served up an ace during the battle, but Anker won the best-of-three with a 6-0, 6-2 final.
Later in the afternoon, Lemaitre and Leach took on the no. 3-ranked doubles pairing from the Atlantic South, Andrew Esses and Nolan Shaw, in a best-of-three doubles battle. The duo from Emory (Ga.) won their spin as well and the Bruins began the match with the serve. Fox won the fourth and fifth games of set one after falling behind early, 3-0, but the Emory pairing picked up the last three games to grab an early 6-2 lead. Fox won the first two games of the second set and also picked up the seventh game to close the gap to make it 4-3, but Emory answered back with the final two games to win the match and advance.
What It Means
Fox finishes 2022 with its second appearances in both the team and individual NCAA postseasons in as many years after another strong year for the program as it continues to grow under coach Jeff Cero's leadership.
