Bruins Blaze by Beacons in Record-Setting Season Opener

EUGENE, Ore. --- The George Fox women's soccer team started their season with a bang, scoring early and often in a dominant season-opening 7-0 win over Bushnell.

How It Happened
The Bruins set the pace from the start and found the back of the net in the 5th minute of play. Taylor Ho picked up a pass from Maggie Phillips and sent one by the Beacon defense to put Fox up early. From there, it was the Maggie Phillips show. The senior, fresh off of a First Team All-Northwest Conference selection the year prior, notched a hat trick in the first half as the Bruins jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Phillips picked up two assists from sophomore Becca Kozak in the 20th and 35th minute, and another from freshman Madison Fuller in the 43rd.

The Bruins continued to relentlessly attack the Beacon defense in the second half. For the game, Fox outshot Bushnell 30-7 in the game, including 12 shots on goal. The Kozak-to-Phillips connection continued to bring in results with another goal in the 62nd minute; The Oregon transfer checked out in the 62nd minute to conclude her day with five goals.

With Phillips out, Hannah Beardemphl made sure to keep the scoring going with another strike in the 69th minute to push the score up to 7-0. Over the last 20 minutes, the Bruins emptied the bench and gave several players their first college action as they cruised to their first win of the season.

Records Set
Two Bruins tied school records on the day: Phillips' five-goal outing was tied for the most all-time in Fox history with Monique Weaver, who scored five goals against Cascade in September of 2003. Meanwhile, Kozak's three assists were the most since Julie Alexander tallied three in an October 2004 Whitworth home game. The seven-goal victory was the biggest victory since an 8-1 win over Bushnell, then Northwest Christian, on September 2, 2009.

Coach's Thoughts
"We had a good team performance," Bruin head coach Laura Schott said, "I'm really happy for Maggie and koz and our entire roster that supported their historic performances. We know it's early, and we are pleased with game one, but we can't wait to get back on the field Saturday versus Multnomah."

What It Means
The Bruins improve to 1-0 on the young season, while the Beacons drop to 0-3.

What's Next
The Bruins will come to Newberg to host the Multnomah Lions for their first regular season game at Austin Sports Complex on Saturday, September 3. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
