TACOMA, Wash. -- To say the George Fox women's soccer team is rolling would be an understatement. With a dominant 3-0 win over the Puget Sound on Sunday— their first win over the Loggers in the 21st century — the Bruins are off to a 4-0 start.
How It Happened
The Bruins didn't take long to attack the Logger back line. After
Maggie Choate's deep shot was deflected by a Logger defender, the Bruins found the back of the net thanks to a perfect ball from Choate to Lucy Brant on the corner kick. The goal was Brant's first shot of the season and snuck its way into the top left of the frame to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead.
As has been the case early on this season, the potent Bruin offense quickly followed their first goal with another score. This time around, it was
Hannah Beardemphl, who received a perfect through ball from
Taylor Ho and made the most of it, converting on the opportunity to extend the Fox lead.
While the offense was humming early on, the Bruin defense continued to shine. Through four games this season, Fox has yet to allow a goal. Despite getting six shots off on Sunday, Puget Sound never threatened
Madeline Bailey with a shot on target. The sophomore from Myerstown, Pa., has yet to concede a goal in her career.
With the defense stifling the Logger attack, the Bruins finished off the Loggers in the 48th minute with their third and final goal. Beardemphl received a nifty pass from senior
Maggie Phillips and pushed through contact to find
Becca Kozak. The sophomore converted the cross with a shot that snuck by the left goalpost and gave Fox a commanding 3-0 lead. From there, the Bruins held off Puget Sound to beat the Loggers for the first time since 1999 in a convincing fashion.
Top Performances
Through four games, the Bruins have outscored their opponents an otherworldly 20-0. In three of their four wins, three different Bruins have scored. On Sunday afternoon, Kozak, Beardemphl, and Ho were the three to find the net. Beardemphl and Choate picked up assists on the day.
Maggie Phillips, who has experienced a scoring "drought" of two games, recorded four shots and two shots on goal.
Coach's Thoughts
"I'm very proud of the tream to go on the road and keep focus for the full 90 minutes, "Bruin coach
Laura Schott said afterward. "This is a very strong Puget Sound team."
