NEWBERG -- The George Fox men's tennis program opened its fall season with a five-team tournament and picked up multiple wins in singles and doubles against talent from NCAA Division I programs.

How It Happened

The round-robin format featured players from University of Portland, Seattle University, Pacific (Ore.), and William Jessup (Calif.) and began on Friday evening in Newberg. Fox earned two doubles victories over Seattle on the first day. Camden Camacho and Vahag Pashayan earned a 6-3 win over the UP duo and Rox Rogers paired with newcomer Lars Schmassmann to win, 6-1. Austin Stone and Hunter Fujimori also picked up two doubles wins as a tandem with two 6-4 scores.

Jackson Whittaker picked up a hard-won victory over his opponent from Seattle, 5-7, 7-5, 10-6 on day one. Jonah Isa, Stone, and Schmassmann also earned singles wins in their Bruin debuts.

"I thought the energy was good, and the focus was good coming into our first tournament," coach Jeff Cero said after the first day. "The guys were ready to play against someone from another team and it showed. We have a lot of development and work to do, but the doubles energy was great at the end of a full day. Lars & Rox really played at a high level and complemented it with smart, high percentage play. Once Cam & Vahag got going, they did much of the same."

On day two, Fox found more success against DI foes as Rogers and Vahag Pashayan defeated players from Seattle. Stone lost a tightly-contested match to a Pilots player from UP that went to three sets, and Rogers also played a very competitive match against a UP opponent in a three-set defeat. Rox defeated D-1 Seattle U Michael Frank

Pashayan and Camacho picked up another doubles win over an NCAA DI pairing to cap the day for Fox.

"Singles was a good experience for everyone today," Cero said after day two. "There were lots of ups and downs, and we definitely have a good amount to work on heading into ITA's. Doubles was a little flat overall, but all a part of the growing process."

What Happens Next

Fox will travel to Portland for the ITA Northwest Regional Championships on 9/29-10/02 at Lewis & Clark to cap their fall schedule.
