WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The George Fox women's basketball team wasn't able to get the offense rolling in a defensive battle against Whitman on Friday night, with the Blues coming out on top, 65-38.
How It Happened
Fox came out ready In the early minutes of the quarter, jumping out to a brief 6-2 lead. However, the Blues quickly created some separation, holding the Bruin offense without a field goal in the final eight minutes to give Whitman a 16-7 lead heading into the second.
Though the Bruin offense was able to increase productivity in the second quarter, the Blues also increased their scoring. Fox closed the gap to within five several times in the early stages of the second, but a 13-1 Whitman run to close the half gave the Blues a 17-point lead, 18-35.
The third quarter started with a spark, as
Claire Hinds snatched a steal and laid up the easy two points to get the Bruins scoring started. A majority of their points in the third quarter came from layups in the paint and short jump shots around the basket. Other than Hinds' layup that helped close the Whitman lead to 13, the third quarter hovered between a 15-17 point deficit for the Bruins, as they headed to the fourth down, 48-32.
In the fourth, the Blues once again broke away offensively, scoring 17 more and finalizing the score at 65-38.
Top Performances
Alexa Borter and
Ella Roberts led offensively with eight points apiece, shooting a combined 6-14 from the field to lead the Bruins' offense. Defensively,
Claire Hinds and Borter snatched two steals each, while Roberts and
Erin Yoshitake also contributed a steal to the Bruins' defensive effort.
What It Means
The Bruins move to 2-3 in conference play while the Blues move to 4-2. Fox sits at 5-9 on the season.
