PORTLAND, Ore -- Fresh off of their biggest win of the season, the George Fox Women's basketball team jumped out early against Lewis & Clark and never looked back, using a big night from
Alexa Borter and solid team defense in their 60-46 victory.
How It Happened
The game, initially scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, was delayed nearly 90 minutes after a loose bolt required Lewis & Clark staff to bring in a new rim. The long delay hardly seemed to affect the Bruins, as they picked up right where they left off at Pacific, scoring the first 10 points of the game. The Fox D was able to lock down the Pios, holding them to six points on 2-11 shooting to take a four-point lead into the second quarter.
The second quarter was much like the first, with both defenses keeping the scoring low. While the Bruins shot only 3-14 from the field, their strong defense held Lewis & Clark to just 11 first-half points on 16% shooting to lead at the half, 19-11. Borter's strong inside presence nearly allowed her to break her career high with eight rebounds in the first half.
After 30 first-half points, both sides came out of the halftime locker room with fire, scoring a combined 33 points in the third. The Bruins outscored the Pios 17-16, shooting 7-13 from the field with three triples to keep their lead at 36-27.
The Bruins continued to add on in the fourth, outscoring the Pios 24-19.
Erin Yoshitake, after two points in the first three quarters, got hot from deep to score nine in the fourth. Fox ramped up their shooting once again, going 9-16 from the field to coast to their second straight win, 60-46.
Coach's Thoughts
"[I'm] super proud of our group and how we battled on a day where a lot of shots weren't falling for us," Bruin head coach
Mike Coppolino said.
Top Performances
Alexa Borter had a career day on the glass for the Bruins, coming down with 17 rebounds on the night — seven offensive and 10 defensive. Her 17 boards are the most by a Bruin since Lauren Codling pulled down 20 in January 2015. Borter nearly had her first career double-double with eight points on the night.
Offensively,
Jenna Lacey,
Claire Hinds, and
Ella Roberts split the scoring for the Bruins with 13 apiece. They combined for 14-31 from the field with seven triples to conquer the Pios. Defensively, Hinds and Lacey had a block apiece, while Lacey and Borter also snatched two steals.
