FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Just minutes after the George Fox Women's soccer team tied the game against Pacific, the Boxers scored on an 89th-minute penalty kick that sank the Bruins, 2-1.
How It Happened
The Bruins found themselves down early as the Boxers scored a goal in the 14th minute that put GFU behind, 1-0.
Hannah Beardemphl and
Liv Haima each had two shots before the 30th minute in attempts to tie the game, but none of the shots were on target and the score remained unchanged.
Both teams' defensive units turned it up for the rest of the half, with neither team allowing a shot on goal for the rest of the half – the only shot after Haima's in the 29th minute was shot over the top of the Bruins' goal by the Boxers in the 43rd. That was a trend that would continue in the second half; after two quick on-target attempts by the Boxers in the opening of the second half (both saved by keeper
Emily Robey), there wouldn't be another on-target shot until the 84th minute.
In that 84th minute, Beardemphl found
Lucy Brandt, who confidently put the ball into the net, tying the game at 1-1 and seemingly breathing life into the Bruins' lungs. With the game tied, Fox had just six minutes to score a go-ahead goal and head home with a conference win. Brandt had another opportunity to score just moments later, getting another look at a goal seconds after her first goal, but this time she was denied as the Boxers' keeper came up with a clutch save to keep the game tied.
The Boxers then moved the ball to the Bruins' side of the field, and as the final seconds of the game approached, a foul call against Fox gave the Boxers a chance at an 89th-minute game-winning penalty kick. Pacific's Julia Fechter was able to get the ball past Robey, and the Boxers would win, 2-1, sending the Bruins home in heartbreaking fashion.
