NEWBERG, Ore. -- After a two-win weekend to start the season, the George Fox men's tennis team turned to tough competition, losing 1-6 to a Division I opponent in Portland State.
How It Happened
The No. 24-ranked Bruins contended well for the doubles point, competing in all three matches but coming up just short.
Camden Camacho and
Vahag Pashayan played extremely tight in the #1 doubles, falling 7-5, as did the team of
Lars Schmassmann and
Alle Banna by three sets in the #2 doubles.
In singles, Camacho was the lone victor for the Bruins on the day, taking down Andrin Zuellig 5-7, 6-3 (10-8) in the #6 singles. On court one, Pashayan hung with Portland States'Â Andrea Brignacca in a marathon match, falling to the graduate student 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 (8-10).
Hunter Fujimori also won a set for the Bruins but lost in his game 7-5, 4-6 (8-10).
Austin Stone,
Eli Mizerski, and Schmassmann also dropped their hard-fought games against the Division I school.
Coach's Thoughts
"We had some good matches, and good moments, but ultimately didn't win the big points needed to," Bruin head coach
Jeff Cero said, "Camden, Vahag, and Hunter played great singles as well. A lot of good things to build on heading into next weekend's matches."
What Comes Next
The Bruins have Saturday off before returning to Newberg to face another Division I Big Sky school in Idaho State. The match is scheduled to begin at 8:00 am on Friday.
