NEWBERG, Ore. -- For the second straight game, the George Fox men's tennis team took on a formidable Division I opponent; after playing Portland State the Friday prior, the Bruins faced their Big Sky rival Idaho State one week later, winning one doubles match but falling, 0-7.
How It Happened
Fox started strong with a doubles victory on court one. There,
Vahag Pashayan and
Camden Camacho took down the Bengals' Andreas Kramer and Valentino De Pellegrin in a close match, 7-5. For Camacho, it was his second straight victory over a D-I opponent — taking down a Portland State player in singles the week prior.
Though the Bruins won the match, Idaho State still took the doubles' point with two 6-1 victories over the other Fox players.
On the singles side, the Bruins fought hard, winning some sets, but ultimately came up just short in all six matches. Pashayan picked up four games in his 2-6, 2-6 loss while
Eli Mizerski played valiantly on court two, winning the first set, 7-6, but dropping his next two.
Lars Schmassmann and
Jackson Whittaker also won one set but lost close matches, with Schmassmann losing 0-6, 6-3, 2-6 and Whittaker falling 2-6, 6-1, 3-10.
Austin Stone and
Hunter Fujimori rounded out the Bruin players, as Fox lost 0-7 against the stiff D-I competition.
Coach's Thoughts
"We fought hard today, but Idaho State was a good team and showed it in their discipline, consistency, and ability to close games." Bruin head coach
Jeff Cero said, "Props to Cam and Vahag for digging in against a solid team and winning the way they did. We're looking forward to taking on Seattle tomorrow, and building on it."
What Comes Next
Fox returns to the court on Saturday to take on their third straight Division I opponent in the Seattle Redhawks. The match is set to begin at 11:00 am.
