NEWBERG, Ore -- Playing in their first game of the season on Friday afternoon, the George Fox women's tennis team picked up a win over Pacific, taking the match, 6-3.
How It Happened
The Bruins dropped the #1 doubles match against the Boxers, with
Kalli Wiker and Ellie Mangam falling short to Pacific, 8-0. Fox fought back hard, though, with the team of
Olivia Morris and
Cassey Hitch winning, 8-1, and the squad of
Emily McDonald and
Elizabeth Cook winning, 8-3.
It was a similar story for Fox in the singles matches — losing two in the #1 and #2 matches, but winning the remaining four.
Arianna Rader,
Stephanie Ramirez Barreto,
Abigail Bond, and
Sophie Denham all won their respective matches — with Ramirez Barreto, Bond, and Denham victorious by an identical 6-0, 6-1 score.
Coach's Thoughts
"It was a total team effort," Bruin head coach
Rick Cruz said, "Everyone got an opportunity to play and they each took advantage of it. It will be fun to watch this team progress throughout the season."
What It Means
Though the game features two Northwest Conference foes, Friday's match does not count toward the season standings. Fox's record now sits at 1-0, while the Boxers drop their first game of the season.
What Comes Next
Fox will stay at home on Saturday morning, taking on a Division I opponent in the Seattle Redhawks. The match is scheduled to begin at 11:00 am
