Bruins Drop Third Straight in Loss to Whitman

NEWBERG, Ore. -- The George Fox women's basketball team faced a red-hot Whitman Blues squad that had won its last 10 games. On Saturday, the Blues pushed their streak to 11 by handing the Bruins a 43-74 loss.

How It Happened
The Bruins struggled to keep the ball in the early moments of the game, committing four turnovers before Alyssa Wells scored a bucket. The Blues hit tough jumpers despite solid Fox pressure, jumping out to a 10-0 lead. For the quarter, the Bruin women shot just 1-9 from the field, and entered the second trailing, 19-3.

Fox flexed their muscles defensively in the second quarter, holding a potent Whitman attack to 28% from the field and pulling the game within reach. Jenna Lacey had seven straight in just one minute to get the Blue lead down to 12, and Claire Hinds nailed a triple to cut the Bruin deficit to 10 at halftime. The Bruins moved the ball well in the second — of the five made field goals, three were assisted.

After a poor-shooting second quarter, the Blues shot lights out in the third and continued into the fourth. Whitman scored 46 points in the second half alone, shooting above 60% in both periods. A 14-3 run to start the half put things out of reach for the Bruins, who turned to their bench by the end of the fourth. Madeline Schumacher scored her third collegiate point in the game off of a free throw in the waning seconds, as the Bruins fell, 43-74.

Top Performers
Jenna Lacey and Emily Stephens led the way in scoring on the night, with each Bruin totaling 11 points. Stephens shot 5-8 from the field Schumacher, her first double-digit scoring night since December. In addition to her 11 points, Lacey led the way for the second consecutive on the glass, pulling down five boards. Though she only scored five on the night, Erin Yoshitake distributed the ball well with a team-high five assists.

What It Means
The Bruins fall to 9-15 (6-8 NWC) on the year, while the Blues win their 11th straight win to sit at 17-5 (12-2 NWC) on the season.

What Comes Next
Fox will remain at home for their second consecutive weekend as they take on the Lewis & Clark Pioneers on Friday, Feb. 17. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
