NEWBERG, Ore -- The George Fox women's tennis team fought through cold weather to take down the College of Idaho Yotes in the final game before the beginning of NWC play.
How It Happened
The number one court saw the closest doubles finish of the season for the Bruins, as the team of
Cassey Hitch and
Kalli Wiker rallied from down 4-6 to take down Leiana Almaraz and Lauren Kreutzer, 8-7 (7-4). The Bruins then swept the remaining two doubles matches, with both
Brenna VanderYacht and
Arianna Rader and the team of
Abigail Bond and
Sophie Denham winning 8-4.
On the singles side, it was tough sledding at the top, with
Ellie Mangan and
Emily McDonald fighting hard but ultimately coming up short. From there, though, Fox won the remaining four singles matches.
Elizabeth Cook won her match 6-2, 6-1, while VanderYacht won 6-0, 6-4. Bond won on court six in her first singles match of the year, 6-4, 6-4, while Rader won in the closest match of the day. After dropping the first set, 1-6, Rader staved off Nicole Tran to win set two, 6-3. In the final super set, the sophomore jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back, winning 10-4.
Coach's Thoughts
"We got another good effort all the way through the lineup," Bruin head coach
Rick Cruz said, "Ari fought back after a rough first set to get a good win against a tough opponent and Emily played some of her best tennis in a match that could have gone either way. This was a good match for us as we head into our conference schedule."
What It Means
The Bruins improve to 3-2, while the Yotes fall to 3-5.
What Comes Next
The Bruins will be off the rest of the weekend before playing their first road match against a familiar opponent in Lewis & Clark. The two teams met one week prior, with Fox winning, 7-2.
