SALEM, Ore. -- After conceding an early goal to the Willamette Bearcats, the George Fox women's lacrosse team made sure to put their foot down, taking down the home Bearcats, 20-8.
How It Happened
The Bruins fell down, 0-1, after a goal by Willamette's Claire Kisielnicki in the opening minute of the game, but were sure to respond with vengeance: Fox scored the next eight goals to take a commanding 8-1 lead.
Marena Tharpe scored three goals in the frame as the Bruins led, 8-2.
The second quarter belonged to
Kyra Barnes, as she upped Tharpe's number with four goals in the period. Already with two goals in the first, Barnes scored in a variety of ways, with her first goal of the second quarter coming off of a
Lana Davis missed shot, Barnes, picked up the ground ball and put one past the Bearcat goalie. Her second goal was off of an unassisted attack, while her third came from a free-position shot. Barnes ended her quarter with a goal with 1:29 remaining off of an assist from
Lyla Roy to give Fox a 14-4 lead.
Fox extended their lead to 14 points in the third quarter, outscoring Willamette 5-2, with Davis chipping in assists on two of the five goals. The Bruin women outshot the Bearcats 8-3 in the quarter, all without committing a turnover. In the fourth quarter, Fox slowed the pace, with
Ava Bluhm scoring the lone goal for the team as the Bruins coasted to a 20-8 victory.
Top Performers
Barnes finished the afternoon with seven goals, just one shy of
Carleigh DeLapp's program record. Bluhm was close behind with five goals, while Tharpe and
Olivia Geyling finished with three; Davis and DeLapp rounded out the scoring with one goal apiece. Davis led the team with four assists, while Geyling had a team-high four ground balls.
