TACOMA, Wash. -- The George Fox Men's Basketball team shot 50% from the field, but couldn't stop the Puget Sound Loggers offense, losing 93-83 in Tacoma on Saturday night.
How It Happened
After a back-and-forth opening stretch, the Bruins found themselves within range of the third-place team in the conference, down six points ten minutes into the first half. Fox was holding their own shooting — and holding the Loggers to a worse shooting percentage — but UPS out-rebounded Fox viciously throughout the game, making it difficult for GFU to break within five points of the lead. The Loggers led for 17 minutes of half, with Fox doing everything they could offensively to keep up; the Bruins went 6-13 from downtown, and 11-27 from the field.
Puget Sound's rebounding advantage led to a large difference in shot attempts: The Loggers had 43 shot attempts to Fox's 27. In the half, UPS snagged 14 offensive boards compared to Fox's 13 defensive rebounds, and Fox went into halftime down 12 points with ground to cover.
Fox outscored UPS in the second half, but not by enough to overcome the deficit. The Bruins shrunk the lead below 10 multiple times, but the Loggers responded each time with a mini-run to extend the lead back out. The Bruins allowed significantly fewer offensive rebounds in the second frame, and shot an incredible 54% from the field on 31 attempts; however, the Loggers shot 65% and went 9-10 from the charity stripe as they closed out the game in the second half. Fox made a late push, hoping for a miracle, but the Loggers hit their free throws and shut the door on any last-minute comebacks, and the Bruins fell, 83-93.
