ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. – George Fox softball traveled to Kentucky for the Pioneer Classic, falling in the opener to Calvin Knights before taking down Transylvania, 6-2.
Game One
George Fox was held to just two hits in their matchup against the Calvin Knights, unable to score in a 4-0 loss.
Fox gave up four runs in the game, but only one of those runs came off a hit by the Knights — the Knights scored their first run on a sacrifice fly in the first, and two off of fielder's choices in the second.
Fox pitched a clean second half of the game, with reliever
Jenna Kister throwing three innings of scoreless softball, getting three strikeouts, and giving up just two hits. The pitching gave the Bruins a chance, but the Bruin bats couldn't get going in the contest.
The Bruins could not move a baserunner past first base for the entire game, as every time they singled the next batters would be retired quickly by the Calvin pitching staff. The struggle put the Bruins in a tough spot in the 4-0 loss.
Game Two
GFU responded to their loss earlier in the day with a solid win in the second game, using a late-game rally to defeat the Transylvania Pioneers, 6-2.
Transylvania struck first in the fourth with an RBI single, to which Fox responded with a run in the bottom half of the same inning.
Sharon Tomei hit a solo shot in the next inning to give GFU their first lead of the day.
The Pioneers tied the game in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly. The Bruins then took care of business in the bottom half of the sixth,
Brooke Riggins started things off with a home run to left to give Fox the lead.
Claire Fountain got to second base from which Tomei drove her in with a single.
Sydney Sandifer homered right after to drive in the final two runs of the game. Fox pitcher
Ashley Davis shut the Pioneers down to finish the game with a 6-2 win.
