ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. – After splitting their games yesterday, George Fox softball won both of their games today against Defiance College and DePauw University in convincing fashion, 11-1 and 10-2.
Game One
The Bruins kicked off their day in style, scoring 11 unanswered runs en route to an 11-1 thrashing of the Defiance College Yellow Jackets.
Defiance got their only run in the first inning – scoring on a double – before GFU pitcher
Jenna Kister shut them out the rest of the way. Fox scored in the first inning as well, quickly taking a 2-1 lead after an RBI double off the bat of
Sharon Tomei and a sacrifice fly from
Reagan Medina.
The Bruins put up three runs in the second inning, scoring off back-to-back doubles from left-fielder
Kimberly Pulido and second-baseman
Kamryn Potter.
Emma Classen stole second in the third and an error by the Yellow Jackets during the play allowed a run to score, pushing the lead to 6-1.
Fox ended the game early via ten-run rule in the fifth after scoring five runs in the inning. The scoring started with an
Aliya Harmon solo homer, followed by a walk and a steal that put Classen on third. With Classen on third, Pulido put the ball in play, reaching first on an error that scored Classen. After a Potter single, there were runners on first and third for Tomei, who hit a shot out of the park to end the game, Fox winning early, 11-1.
Game Two
The Bruins ended the day with their second win in as many games, pushing their Kentucky win streak to three with a 10-2 win over the DePauw University Tigers.
It took no time for the Bruins' offense to pick up where they left off from their first game, scoring four runs in the top half of the first. GFU used good plate discipline and opportunistic baserunning to capitalize on poor pitching from the Tigers.
Fox added three more runs to their lead in the second inning, with
Sydney Sandifer, Medina, and Harmen all picking up RBIs. The Bruins led 7-0 going into the third, with starting pitcher
Ashley Davis making life very difficult for DePauw. The Tigers were able to get a run across in the third, but Fox scored once more in the sixth inning off a Medina solo shot that put them up 8-1, keeping the Tigers at a comfortable distance.
Tomei hit her second home run of the day in the top of the seventh: a two-out two-RBI blast to put Fox up 10-1. The Tigers squeaked out a run in the bottom half of the seventh before Davis shut down the game, ending the 2-0 day for GFU.
Top Performances
Sharon Tomei went 4-7 with two homers, two doubles, and six RBI on the day.
Reagan Medina and
Aliya Harmon hit home runs as well, and the starting pitchers from both games (
Jenna Kister, and
Ashley Davis) went the full game allowing just three runs combined for the day.
What It Means
Fox improves to 7-9 (2-4 NWC), and are now 3-1 in the Pioneer Classic.
What Comes Next
The Bruins play their last two games in Kentucky tomorrow, with games against Anderson University and Hanover College.
