NEWBERG, Ore. – The George Fox baseball team bounced back from a loss the day prior, taking down Puget Sound with two 6-5 games to win the series over the Loggers.
Game One
The Loggers started the game off with a bang, as Dylan Joyce hit his 10th home run of the season to put UPS up, 1-0. Following that hit, neither team managed a hit over the next two innings before the Bruins took the lead.
Jared Gee picked up his first home run of the season in interesting fashion, using his speed to turn a triple into an inside-the-park homer as a long fly ball ricocheted off and around the wall. Later in the inning,
Jeremy Sangalang reached home off of a wild pitch to give Fox a 2-1 lead.
Carson Coulter brought
Breyndon Nakamura home to extend the lead to 3-1, but the lead was short-lived. Four runs in the seventh inning from the Loggers gave the visitors a 5-3 advantage.
With their backs against the wall in the eighth, the Bruin men stepped up to the challenge.
Jared Miller started off the inning with a double before Gee drove him home with an RBI triple — one of three triples Fox would hit on the day. Gee himself would be scored moments later with an RBI groundout from Coulter before
Brandon King gave the Bruins the win. With two outs, King drove home
Jeremy Sangalang with a double down the right field line, putting the Bruins in front for good, 6-5.
Game Two
Though the score was the same for game two of the day's doubleheader, the way the Bruins got to the win was very different. This time around, Fox jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third thanks to RBIs from
Jared Miller and
Jeremy Sangalang. Though Dylan Joyce recorded yet another solo shot for UPS, Fox's lead grew to 3-1 with a
Matthew Sebolsky RBI single.
The Sebolsky single caused Logger skipper Jeff Halstead to bring in pitcher Bennett Allen.
Spencer Roos quickly welcomed Allen to the game by slamming the first pitch he saw over the fence, growing the Bruin lead to 5-1. However, the lead would be short-lived. UPS slowly cut into the lead throughout the fifth inning, taking advantage of a botched pick-off and four hits to tie the game up, 5-5.
In a remix of the game prior, it was another later RBI single — this time Miller driving home Sebolsky — that gave the Bruins a 6-5 lead. Nursing the one-run lead into the ninth inning,
Alex Abbott entered the game for
Ryder Edwards, quickly discarding three of four batters to give Fox their second 6-5 win of the day.
Top Performances
Caleb Debban and
Ryder Edwards both picked up a win on the day for the Bruins, while
Alex Abbott earned his second save of the year.
Jared Gee led the team with three hits, tacking on two RBIs as well.
Carson Coulter totaled two hits and two RBIs on the day, while Gee, Sebolsky, Roos, and Sangalang all scored two runs.
