PORTLAND, Ore. -- After going back and forth, the George Fox softball team pulled away with two runs in the seventh inning against Lewis & Clark, winning what was the only completed game of the day, 9-6.
Game One
After a scoreless top of the first inning, the Pioneers would take their only lead of the game off of a home run from Mari Alvarez. The Bruins came back in the second inning with their own home run from
Aliya Harmon, tying the game, 1-1.
Pitcher
Ashley Davis got her first strikeouts of the day in the second inning, not allowing a player to get on base for two innings. Fox jumped ahead after a solid fourth inning when four players drew a walk, and
Claire Fountain scored with
Kamryn Potter's walk. After a pitching change by the Pioneers,
Sydney Sandifer was hit by a pitch leading to another run scored, this time by
Brooke Riggins. Next up was
Reagan Medina, who singled up the middle allowing
Sharon Tomei and Potter to score. The Bruins ended the inning up, 5-1, leaving one on base.
Lewis & Clark got two more runs in the fourth inning off of a two-run home run from Riley Anderson. The Bruins lost their lead in the fifth inning when the Pioneers scored two additional runs off of three errors by the Fox.
Kami Gibson came in to secure the final out of the inning.
The tie was short-lived as Potter hit a two-run home run to center field after
Kimberly Pulido singled to the pitcher in the sixth inning. The Pios got their final run of the game in the sixth inning before the Bruins were able to extend their lead during the top of the seventh inning,
ending the inning up 9-6 after a Potter RBI groundout to second base. Fox held on to their lead in the bottom of the seventh, finishing the game with a win, 9-6.
Game Two
The Bruins came out hot in the second game as they jumped out to a six-run lead at the end of the first inning. As the rain started to fall at the bottom of the second inning, the Bruins would see a wild pitch from Gibson, allowing what would be the day's final run. Soon after, the teams were forced to suspend the game for the rest of the day.
Top Performances
Kamryn Potter scored two runs and three RBIs in the first game, and
Aliya Harmon scored two runs and one RBI.
Ashley Davis had five strikeouts in game one.
Coach's Thoughts
"We didn't play our best softball but we're able to continue battling and came out with a win," Bruin head coach
Jessica Hollen said, "The next few games vs them will be tough!"
What It Means
Fox improves to 15-10 (8-5 NWC) on the year, while Lewis & Clark drops to 16-9 (8-7 NWC).
What Comes Next
With the Bruins' second game suspended, they will look to complete their doubleheader scheduled for Saturday at 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm due to forecasted rain.
