Bruins Sweep Singles Matches to Win Against Whitman

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- The George Fox men's tennis team returned to the court with a win, 7-2, sweeping singles matches against Whitman College.

How It Happened
In doubles, the duo of Austin Stone and Eli Mizerski took on the Blues top doubles team. Stone and Mizerski would lose the match in a close contest, 8-5. On court two, Camden Camacho and Jackson Whittaker would face off in another tight game. That match ended in the Bruins favor, winning 8-6. In the final doubles match, Hunter Fujimori and Lars Schmassmann were unable to win, losing 8-4.

Heading into singles, the Bruins looked to take the lead. The Blues did not go down without a fight, with most matches staying close. In the number one matchup, Eli Mizerski handled his opponent, winning, 6-2, 6-3. Austin Stone was on court two, and he was able to win in the first set, 6-3. The second set lasted longer; Stone won the second set, 7-5. Hunter Fujimori would see a similar scoreline winning in his match, 7-5, 6-3. Fox was able to get another win when Camden Camacho won his match, 6-4, 6-3. 

The match between Lars Schmassmann and Noah Baker would need to go into a third set. Schmassmann came out with the win, 7-5, 6-4, 6-1. On court six, Jackson Whittaker needed a tiebreaker to win his matchup. After splitting the first two sets, Whittaker took the win after winning the tiebreaker, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0. The singles outcome would end favoring the Bruins after sweeping the field to grab the win, 7-2.

What It Means
The Bruins improve to a 7-9 record overall with a 4-0 mark in Northwest Conference play, while the Blues fall to a 5-14 overall record and 4-3 in NWC on the season. 

What Comes Next
The Bruins continue their Whits trip tomorrow as they head up to Spokane to play Whitworth on Saturday at 11:00 am.
