NEWBERG, Ore. -- The George Fox women's tennis rallied from a tough doubles showing with strong singles play in their 7-2 win over Whitworth.
How It Happened
In doubles, the Bruins would be able to win one of the matchups. The number two doubles team of
Ellie Mangan and
Olivia Morris won their match by a score of, 8-5. The Bruins team of
Cassey Hitch and
Kalli Wiker lost, 8-3. The duo of Ari Rader and
Brenna VanderYacht lost by the same score, 8-3.Â
Heading into singles, Fox looked to take the lead.
Ellie Mangan was able to start the team off with a win in her match, 6-3, 6-0.
Emily McDonald would also be able to make quick work in her victory, winning, 6-1, 6-1.
Arianna Rader and
Brenna VanderYacht won their matchups, 6-4, 6-1, and, 6-4, 6-4.Â
Two singles matches required a third set to find the outcome. After losing the first set,
Kalli Wiker came back to win the second set, forcing a final set. Wiker secured the win after winning the third set. The final scoreline was 1-6, 6-2, 6-1. In the longest match of the day,
Olivia Morris would win in three sets. After losing in a close first set, 4-6, Morris would come back to win the second set, 6-0, and third set, 7-5, to take the match. The Bruins were able to sweep the singles matches, winning the match, 7-2.Â
Coach's Thoughts
"Whitworth is always tough to play and they showed it coming out aggressive in doubles winning 2 of the 3. Thankfully Ellie and Olivia were able to finish strong in their match giving us some momentum going into the singles," Bruin head coach
Rick Cruz said, "In the singles, everyone came out with much more focus. We were able to jump on them in a few spots and it gave us momentum for the rest of the match. Our goal now is to finish strong next weekend!"
What It Means
The Bruins are now 7-8 overall and 3-2 in Northwest Conference play, while the Pirates fall to 6-8 overall and 1-4 in NWC.
What Comes Next
The Bruins will head into their final regular season weekend, first heading down the road to play Pacific on Saturday. That match is set to start at 11:00 am. On Sunday, Fox will return home for senior day at the Multi-Use Facility to play Willamette. The match will start at 11:00 am. Â
