Bruins Kick Off ITA Regionals with Day One Success

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The Bruins men's tennis team traveled to Whitman for the 2023 Fall ITA Northwest Regional Championships. Fox holds the top four singles seeds in the draw and the top two seeds in doubles. 

How it Happened 
Eli Mizerski came in, holding the top seed after a promising freshman campaign. After receiving a bye in the first round, Mizerski won, 6-4, 6-0, against Whitman's Braeden Thomas. Senior Vahag Pashayan is on the opposite side of the bracket in the second seed. Pashayan easily won his match, 6-1, 6-0. 

Returning for a fifth year, Lars Schamassmann is in the third seed, and fellow senior Hunter Fujimori is in the fourth seed. Schamassmann earned a bye in the first round and faced off against Whitman's Viarengo; in this tightly contested match, Schmassmann lost, 6-4, 7-6 (8). Fujimori won his match against his Lewis and Clark opponent. The final senior returner competing was Alle Banna, who won, 6-3, 6-0. 

Notable newcomers for the Bruins Zach Moore, River Apatu, and Nanase Ebisu all won their singles matches to move on to play on Saturday, with Ebisu and Moore taking it in the third set. 

Stretching late into the evening were the doubles teams for the Bruins. The number one seed of Pashayan and Schmassmann won their match easily, 8-1. The number two seed duo of Mizerski and Ebisu continued their success from the Dar Walters Invite, winning, 8-1. Fujimori and Moore were teamed up to keep a clean sheet, winning 8-0. The fourth team to win was Apatu and Banna, winning, 8-4.

What It Means 
The Bruins continue for day two of the ITA regionals tomorrow, September 23rd. Matches are set to start at 8:00 a.m. Saturday.
