PORTLAND, Ore. — After a scoreless first half, the George Fox Men's Soccer team opened the floodgates in the second half, scoring four in the second half to capture their second conference victory in resounding fashion.
How It Happened
Looking to bounce back from a loss to PLU the week before, the Bruins and Pioneers engaged in a defensive battle for the entirety of the first half. Though Fox racked up multiple shots on goal, the Pioneer defense was able to keep the score even at 0-0 heading into the second half, and the Bruins defense prevented the Pioneers from gaining any momentum of their own.
The Bruins wasted no time asserting themselves in the second half, snatching a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the second half after a penalty kick from
Eugene Peltier found the right side of the net. It didn't take long for the Bruins to add on, as they made the score 2-0 a mere three minutes later after
Kellin Aguiar guided a ball to the back of the net after a nifty assist from
Santiago Munevar on a ball that the goalie deflected. Not done yet, the Bruins tacked on yet another goal in the 63rd minute, this time courtesy of a breakaway goal by
Santiago Munevar. The scoring was capped off by a friendly-fire goal by the Pioneers on a pass that was intended for the goalie but found the back of the net instead.
Top Performers
Santiago Munevar led the Bruins offensively, collecting six shots, three of which scared the goal, as well as scoring a goal of his own and contributing an assist to the offensive effort. Defensively,
Keoni Gavino had two saves to keep the Pios out of the goal and off the scoreboard.
Coach's Thoughts
"Belief and doubt are funny things," said Bruin head coach
Paul Karver, "Like a blackberry bush that isn't harvested or tended to, thorns of doubt will grow in every crevice you make available, leaving you to prick your fingers. Sometimes, you have to bleed to remember how special the fruit tastes, and then you must not allow it to grow in that way again."
What It Means
The Bruins improve to 3-5-1 on the season and 2-2-1 in conference play. The Bruins hope to keep their momentum rolling on Sunday against Puget Sound.
