PORTLAND, Ore. — After finding themselves in a deficit early, the George Fox Women's Soccer team battled back in the second half to collect their first conference win of the year over Lewis and Clark.
How It Happened
The day started slow for both teams, as the score remained 0-0 well into the first half. However, about halfway through the half, the Pioneers got the scoring started after Megan Yanagi found the back of the goal. The Bruins offense was unable to match this score as the half wound down, putting them in a 0-1 deficit heading into the second half.
The second half began in a very similar way to the first, as both defenses prevented much action from happening. However, about 10 minutes into the half, the Bruins evened the score at 1-1. This came courtesy of
Hannah Beardemphl, who went unassisted to even the game. Not even 10 minutes later,
Maci Bowman gave the Bruins a lead after heading in a perfectly placed corner kick from
Willa Evans into the back of the net. The Bruins defense would go on the lock down the Pioneers, handing the Bruins their first conference win of the year.
Top Performers
Liv Haima led the Bruins with three shots, while both Beardemphl and Bowman recorded goals for the Bruins. On the defensive side, goalie
Emily Robey recorded four saves, two of which came in the second half to keep the Bruin's momentum rolling.
Coach's Thoughts
"To be successful in this conference right now we have to be really gritty and committed in every moment of the game," said Bruin head coach
Laura Schott, "The players had each others backs today in a new way, and it was really fun to see."
What It Means
The Bruins move to 3-3-3 on the season, with a 1-2-2 record in conference. They hope to improve this on Sunday against Puget Sound.
