NEWBERG, Ore. -- The Bruins start day one of the PNW Invite with a couple of wins over Division I opponents.
How it Happened
The Bruins began singles and doubles play against the University of Idaho, Portland State, and Seattle University in a round-robin format on Saturday. The day started with four rounds of singles play, with each athlete competing in one to three singles matches.
Kicking off the day for the Bruins was
Luis Hernandez,
Zach Moore,
Keita Shoji, and
Lars Schmassmann. Hernandez forced a third set against Seattle's Oliver Hall, but eventually dropped the match 6-4, 2-6, 10-7. Moore also had a highly contested match against Seattle's Michael Frank, but also dropped the match in three sets 4-6, 6-2, 10-7.
Shoji and Schmassmann both had tough match-ups, with Shoji falling to Seattle's Yu-Han Hsieh 6-2, 6-1. Schmassman took on Idaho's Yu-Shun Lai, but Lai got the best of him, finishing the match 6-0, 6-1.
Match two for Moore and Hernandez began at noon, with Moore notching the first victory of the day for the Bruins. His opponent Luca Jovanovic from Portland State retired from the match in the first set due to injury, with Moore leading 2-1 at the time. Hernandez came up short in his second match against PSU's Andrin Zuellig, finishing 6-3, 6-0.
Ikuho Ebisu and Shoji continued their good singles play in the afternoon, with Ebisu taking down Idaho's Noe De Col 7-6(5), 6-4. Shoji also had a close match, pulling out the victory over SU's Jayden Harrison 6-2, 7-6(5).
Moore and Schmassmann played the final two singles matches of the day for the Bruins. Moore played a back-and-forth match against Idaho's Gabriel Morder, eventually getting taken down 4-6, 7-6(4), 10-7. Schmassmann played his second singles match against Seattle's Veselin Kiselkov, falling short 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles play, Ebisu and Schmassman teamed up against Seattle's Hsieh and Yuan Lu, picking up a 6-2 victory. Moore and Shoji took on the Redhawk duo of Kiselkov and Harrison, putting up a contested match, eventually losing 6-4.

The Bruins finished the day with three singles and one doubles victory over Division I opponents. They look to up their win total on day two of the PNW Invite tomorrow, November 3rd. The format flips with doubles matches starting at 9:00 am, and singles matches following shortly after.
