FOREST GROVE, Ore. -- The George Fox men's basketball team picked up a crucial win over Cal Maritime to round out the Ken Schumann, scoring early and often and taking down the Keelhaulers, 98-85.
How It Happened
In what was a sign of things to come,
Momo Stokes started the game with five quick points to help the Bruins jump out to an early lead. That early lead blossomed into a large advantage, with three different players hitting a triple in consecutive fashion:
Samuel Stewart IV,
Noah Marte, and
Jake Bishop all hit a triple as Fox's lead grew to a 26-8 advantage seven minutes in.
Marte continued to cook from deep, hitting three straight shots from beyond the arc to further extend the Fox lead. As a team, the Bruins hit a whopping 15 shots from deep in the first half alone — including five from Marte. Stokes and Bishop piled on the three-point barrage late to give Fox a 30-point lead with one minute left. At the half, it was all GFU, 64-35.
While the three-point shooting cooled in the second half — the Bruins made just one in the second half — the comfortable margin helped Fox stay on top. The Bruins went cold midway through the half, with the Keelhaulers cutting the lead to 15 with a 9-0 run. With 8:29 left, Cal Maritime had gotten to within 11.
From there, Stokes and Stewart IV were sure to slam the door shut, giving Fox the 13-point victory, scoring 15 of the final 17 points for Fox and helping Fox pick up their second win of the season.
