WALTHAM, Mass. – The George Fox women's basketball team forced 23 turnovers and held the Brandeis Judges to just 49 points in a 58-49 win for George Fox.
How It Happened
The Bruins opened the scoring up first, as
Alyssa Wells hit a three – her first of three triples on the day – and the Bruins would go up 9-4 five minutes into the first frame. The hot start would cool, as Brandeis battled back and went on an 11-4 run in the final five minutes of the quarter.
Kylie Ritter got a bucket in the waning seconds of the quarter to end the Judges' run and sent the two teams into the second frame all knotted up at 15-15.
The two teams traded buckets in the opening minutes of the second quarter before both teams slogged through a scoreless sequence that lasted until the six-minute mark of the frame. George Fox's defense shined the second, holding the Judges' offense to less than ten points, outscoring Brandeis 14-9 in the quarter. Heading into the half the Bruins held a five-point lead, 29-24.
The Bruins would carry their defense prowess into the third quarter, as they slowly extended their lead to ten points, eventually finishing the frame with a 45-35 lead. Fox grabbed their largest lead of the game in the third, leading by 12 with six minutes to go in the quarter. Fox had six different players score in the third, as Ritter led the way with four. GFU also snagged four steals as a team in the quarter, as points-off-turnovers became a key theme in the contest.
The Bruins were outscored in the fourth quarter, but by just a point, and they hit eight of their 12 free throws to close out the game with the 58-49 win.
