MARSHALL, Texas -- The George Fox men's basketball team continued their week in Texas, picking up their first win of the road trip with a close 72-65 victory over East Texas Baptist on Wednesday afternoon.
How It Happened
The Bruins started off strong with a 7-0 run in the first five minutes of the game thanks to five straight points from
Aiden Price. East Texas broke the run with a three pointer from Joshua Davis, but George Fox kept up against the Tigers, having another minute-long run and scoring six points in the middle of the half to give the Bruins a solid 25-12 lead. The Tigers didn't let the lead stop them – they responded with an eight-point run with a minute and a half left in the game; bringing their score within three, 30-33, with Fox ahead at the break.
Much like the first half, Price scored a first layup of the second to start the latter half of gameplay. The Tiger persisted on the attack, having a run of six points. before
Nick Greenwood ended the run with a jumper shot off of an assist from
Momo Stokes — giving the Bruins a lead of 37-36. East Texas retaliated with a 4-0 run in the 14th minute of the half, giving them a two point lead over the Bruins. Quickly, though, Price had a layup to tie the game, 40-40,.
Another Tiger run put them ahead six point lead over the Bruins, 46-40, but the game-changing moment came with nine minutes left in the second half; the Bruins went on an 11-2 run, taking the lead and making the score 51-50 on free throws from Stokes. The trams fought back and forth over the next few minutes, but Fox held the Tigers without a field goal for four of the final five minutes. The Bruins outscored the Tigers 13-8 — stretching their lead to as many as 10 and securing the Bruins a win, 72-65.
Top Performers
Aiden Price led the team with 19 points and eight rebounds.
Momo Stokes had 13 points — including 11-12 shooting from the line — and three assists, while
Cory Schramm totaled four blocks and
Vanndon Heard notched three steals.
What It Means
The Bruins now have a 3-5 record, while East Texas Baptist now has an overall record of 3-9.
