SPOKANE, Wash. -- The George Fox women's basketball team was unable to push past the Whitworth Pirates despite a flurry of points in the final minute, dropping atight game in Spokane, 66-62.
How It Happened
Fox fell behind early in the game, as the Pirates exploded out of the gate with a 7-0 run that saw them jump out to a 13-3 lead.
Alyssa Wells was the only Bruin to get points on the board during the opening period, notching two triples and two free throws to keep Fox close and head into the break behind, 19-8.Â
The Bruins offense came alive in the second quarter, though as
Ella Roberts and
Kylie Ritter combined for a six point run in the first three minutes. Roberts put up 11 points in the period as the Bruins shot over 50% from the floor, even taking the lead on a Roberts lay-in late in the quarter. Though Whitworth snagged the lead back late, Fox outscored Whitworth 21-11 in the period, rallying from their early 3-17 deficit to pull within one point at halftime.
The third quarter was a back and forth affair, with the two teams trading scores and possession. The Pirates went on a nine point run late in the period to pull 10 ahead, but Fox battled back well —
Kylie Ritter dropped two scores in the last two minutes to narrow the margin to six heading into the final quarter.
Fox carried this momentum into the final period, immediately putting together a six point run to tie the game. The Pirates retaliated, before another triple from Wells helped to keep the comeback effort alive. The final minute was electric, as the Bruins dropped 13 points on the back of two more three pointers from Yoshitake. In the end, though, it wasn't enough, and the Pirates secured the victory, 66-62.

Alyssa Wells led the way for the Bruins offensively, dropping 15 points and shooting 3-7 from beyond the arc.
Ella Roberts,
Erin Yoshitake and
Kylie Ritter all put together solid performances, with Roberts and Yoshitake dropping 13 points each amd Ritter recording her first career double-double with an 11 point, 10 rebound performance.
Defensively,
Mia Skoro,
Kylie Ritter and
Claire Hinds all collected two steals, while
Ella Roberts picked up a block.
What It Means
The Bruins fall to 5-15 overall (5-8 NWC), while the Pirates improve to 7-15 (4-9 NWC).
What Happens Next
The Bruins will look to regain momentum when they travel to McMinnville for their matchup against the Linfield Wildcats. Tip off is scheduled for 6:00p.m.
