PORTLAND, Ore. – On Saturday, the George Fox women's tennis team traveled to Portland to face off against the Lewis and Clark Pioneers in their first match of the 2024 spring season. The Bruins were able to pick up the win, 6-3.
How It Happened
Fox started out well, winning two out of three of their doubles matches. Junior
Kalli Wiker and Freshman
Riley Bobkiewicz were on court one, taking on the Pios top doubles team. The match would go back and forth, well over an hour and needing a tiebreak to find the winner. The duo would lose the tight one, 8-7 (13-11).
Cassey Hitch and
Kylie Hull would get the first win of the day for the Bruins. They would win their match-up 8-5. On court three,
Shanah Denham and
Arianna Rader grabbed the final win for doubles, 8-4.
In singles,
Elizabeth Cook and
Sophie Denham would win easily in their matches, playing in the fourth and fifth spots. Beating their opponents, 6-2, 6-4, and 6-2, 6-1, respectively. In the number one spot,
Kalli Wiker would take her first set, 6-4, before dropping the next two 6-1. Bobkiewicz would play in the second spot, picking up one set win but ultimately losing 2-6, 6-4, and 2-6. In her first singles match of the season,
Kylie Hull would bounce back after losing the first set, 6-1, winning the following two sets to take the match. In the afternoon's final match,
Abigail Bond would snag the win. After winning the first set, 6-3, Bond would lose the second set, 7-5, forcing a tiebreaker. Bond would win the tiebreak, 10-4, solidifying the Bruin win, 6-3.
Coach's Thoughts
"It was a good first match for us," said Bruin head coach
Rick Cruz, "We had to fight through some tough situations, and I thought we did that. Kylie fought back from a tough first set, and Abby was able to close her match out in a tiebreaker. I'm excited to see how this team improves moving forward."
What Comes Next
The Bruins have their first home match of 2024 on Saturday, February 10th, against the Pacific Boxers. The match is set to begin at 11:00 a.m. at the Multi-Use Facility.
