NEWBERG, Ore. – Kicking off their string of non-conference opponents, the George Fox women's tennis team took on visiting Wellesley on Monday evening, losing 5-4, winning two doubles matches and two singles matches.
How it Happened
Starting in doubles, the duo of
Riley Bobkiewicz and
Kalli Wiker came out and knocked off the number one singles team for Wellesley by a score of 8-5. The Bruins continued their success in doubles play when the number two team of
Kylie Hull and
Shanah Denham won their match. The two were able to take the point when they won the tiebreaker, 7-5. The final match on court three was
Arianna Rader and
Cassey Hitch; the two would go back and forth but lost the match, 8-6.
In singles, two Bruins were able to win against their opponent. On court four,
Elizabeth Cook was able to win the first set 7-6 before quickly securing the second set 6-1.
Sophie Denham was also able to win a three-set match against Lily Cade. After losing the first set, 6-1, Denham was able to come back and win set two and three, 6-4, 6-3. The number one player,
Kalli Wiker, fought hard in her match after dropping the first set, 6-0. Wiker was able to win additional games in the second set, finding success against her opponent, but was unable to find the win, losing the second set 6-3. On court two, Bobkiewicz jumped out to a one set lead after winning, 6-3. Unfortunately, she would lose the following two sets, 6-2, 6-4. In the final two matches of the night, number three player
Kylie Hull lost, 6-4, 6-1. Number five singles,
Shanah Denham, lost her match, 6-0, 6-1.
What Comes Next
The Bruins travel to Hilton Head, South Carolina, to play multiple non-conference matches against Western New England and College of Saint Mary (Neb.) on Thursday, March 21st. Match times are still to be determined.
