MONMOUTH, Ore. – In a marathon game that featured 12 innings and a program record 11 pitchers, the George Fox baseball team took down the Division II Western Oregon Wolves, 3-2,
How It Happened
In a tough pitcher's duel, neither team scored for the first six innings of the game. Fox threw several pitchers in the midweeker, with
Austin McQuilliams,
Tyler Sileo,
Braeden Munger, and
Spencer Johnson all seeing the mound before Western Oregon could score.
After seven innings and just eight baserunners between the two teams, the Wolves took the first run with a sac fly in the bottom of half of the inning. The Bruins tied the score though when
Jared Miller advanced to second on a passed ball and scored a run off of
Noah Meffert triple.
Then, in the top half of the ninth inning, history repeated itself — and went another step. With Miller on second, Meffert stepped to the plate and smacked another triple; the hit was his second triple of the game and ninth of the season, a program record with 11 games to go. The lead would be short-lived, with the Wolves tied their placement again, leaving the bottom ninth inning at 2-2.
Both teams then struggled to get hits until Fox took the lead for the second and final time when
Shane McClendon scored on a passed ball, giving Fox a 3-2 lead. Fox had cycled through pitchers — with usual game one starter
Caleb Debban closing in the 11th inning — working their way to
Spencer Simon, who got of a jam and retired the final batter on a strikeout.
Top Performances
Jared Miller had a total of two runs of the game, while
Shane McClendon had one run.
Noah Meffert had another record-setting performance, finishing 3-5 with two triples and two RBI. The senior leads all of Division III in triples, and set the program record with nine in a season.
Garrett Strube finished with a career-high two hits. On the pitching side,
Caleb Debban earned the win while
Spencer Simon picked up the save.
