SPOKANE, Wash., – The George Fox women's tennis was on the road Saturday morning to take on the Whitworth Pirates, winning 6-3. In the evening, the Bruins traveled to play a neutral site match against Lewis & Clark State at Whitman College, losing 8-0.
How it Happened - Whitworth
The Bruins won two out of the three doubles matches.
Kalli Wiker and
Riley Bobkiewicz teamed up to win 8-5, and
Kylie Hull and
Shanah Denham won their match with the same scoreline.
Arianna Rader and
Cassey Hitch fought in their doubles matches but couldn't find the win, 8-4.
In singles,
Kalli Wiker took on Gracie Smyley, the number one Pirates player. Wiker was unable to secure the win, losing, 6-3, 6-2.
Kylie Hull secured the third point for the Bruins. Hull had to win in the tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-3), in order to secure the first set. Hull found her rhythm in the second set, winning, 6-1. After dropping the first set, 6-4,
Riley Bobkiewicz won the second set, 6-1. The third set went back and forth Bobkiewicz dropped a close one, 7-5.
Arianna Rader dominated her match in the number five spot. Rader won the first set, 6-3, before sweeping the second set, 6-0. The Bruins were now up 4-3 with two matches to go.
Elizabeth Cook lost the first set, 6-2, before winning the second and third set 6-1, 6-1, securing the win for the Bruins. The final match to finish was number six doubles, where
Shanah Denham was taking on Olivia Corbett. Denham won the first set, 6-1, before losing the second set, 6-3. Denham won the tiebreaker, 10-4.
How it Happened - Lewis & Clark State
In doubles play the Bruins kept their teams the same as earlier in the morning. George Fox secured a win in the number one spot, when Bobkiewicz and Wiker won, 8-5. Hull and Denham lost, 8-5, and Rader and Hitch lost 8-3.
On court one,
Kalli Wiker battled but was unable to secure the win, losing, 6-0, 6-3. Both
Kylie Hull and
Sophie Denham found themselves in tight matches, both just narrowly losing, 6-4, 6-4.
Elizabeth Cook found herself in her second close singles match of the day. Cook lost the first set 6-0 before coming back in the second winning 7-5. Cook narrowly lost the tiebreaker 12-10.
Cassey Hitch lost her match by a score of 6-1, 6-1. In number six singles,
Abigail Bond stayed close, pushing her opponent before losing the first set, 7-5. Bond was unable to secure a second set win, losing 6-2.
What It Means
George Fox improves to 11-5, NWC (4-0), the Pirates move to 9-7 (NWC 4-3), and the Lewis & Clark State Warriors improve to 6-18. The Bruins will stay in Walla Walla, Washington, where they will compete against Whitman Blues. The Northwest Conference matchup will begin at 11:00 a.m.
