SPOKANE, Wash. -- The George Fox women's soccer opened their Northwest Conference schedule on Saturday, playing the Whitworth Pirates to a scoreless tie on the road.
How It Happened
Emily Robey had nine saves in the contest, as the Pirates racked up 21 shots against the Bruins' defense, only putting nine of those on goal. Nine of those 21 shots against the Bruins came in the first half, which the Bruins responded to with four shots of their own. The Pirates dominated possession for much of the half, drawing four corners to the Bruins' none. Three of the Bruins' four shots in the half came in their aggressive opening ten minutes – with a shot on goal coming in the eighth minute from the foot of
Lindsey Kong – and all four came before the 15-minute mark.
The second half was even tougher sledding for the Bruins offense, as they were only able to get off two shots, however, the defense stepped up, facing 12 shots from the Pirates and still holding on to the shutout. Robey had five saves in the half, including a couple of highlight-worthy saves in the 76th and 85th minutes. The Bruins had a break-away chance to score at the end of the game, with
Liv Haima streaking down the sideline, however, the Pirates' defense put just enough pressure on the Bruins' attack to force a missed shot, and the game ended in a 0-0 tie.
