NEWBERG, Ore. – The George Fox men's soccer team scored in both halves against the Pacific Boxers, winning 2-0 and notching their first conference win of the season.
How It Happened
After their loss to the Whitworth Pirates last week, the Bruins offense has now scored multiple goals in their previous two games – a tie with the Whitman Blues and the victory over the Boxers today. The goal in the first half came from an
Elijah Soon penalty kick in the 31st minute, the junior's third goal of the year. George Fox controlled the game in the first half, allowing just one shot on goal defensively while getting three off themselves. The Bruins survived a late attack from the Boxers, as Pacific got a shot off that hit the left post, but GFU made it to the half up, 1-0.
The Boxers started the second half much more aggressively than the first, getting two shots on goal in the first five minutes of the final 45, but both were saved by
Justin Huttinger to keep the shutout intact. Huttinger would go on to stop seven more shots-on-goal, picking up seven saves in the half. The junior's stellar half set up the Bruins' offense to tack on another goal, as Kilinahe Warring scored off an assist from
Joshua Chang in the 67th minute. The goal put Fox up, 2-0, and gave Huttinger a cushion to work within the box as Fox attempted to seal up their third shutout of the season. The Boxer's attack was slowed by the Bruins in the rest of the second half but still managed to get off two shots on goal, both stopped by Huttinger. At the final horn, the Bruins had held off the Boxers and picked up their first win in conference play, 2-0.

Coach's Thoughts
"Pacific is a very good team and the way the defend asked a number of questions of us," said Head Coach
Paul Karver. "The guys were brave today and deserve a ton of credit for covering for one another when they needed to. It helped us play with more confidence down the stretch. We will enjoy the moment for now, but will get back to work to face a talented Willamette team tomorrow."
What It Means
The Bruins got back on the winning track, continuing their best start in recent memory and improving to 5-1-1 (1-1-1 NWC). The Boxers fall to 4-4-1 (2-2-1 NWC).
What Comes Next
The Bruins travel to Salem in their next contest, playing the Willamette Bearcats on Sunday, September 29th. Kickoff is at noon.
