NEWBERG, Ore. -- The George Fox women's volleyball team went up against the top team in the NWC in the Puget Sound Loggers, ending in a loss, 3-0.
How It Happened
At the blow of the whistle, Puget Sound came into the game with intensity to take an early 4-0 lead; after a Logger error,
Lexi Baer and
Jordan Hahn put up a powerful block to add to the Bruins score. A smashing kill by
Addison Goff led to two consecutive aces from
Chloe Wiersma to make the score 8-5. The Loggers aggressiveness remained constant and in a series of unfortunate events, as UPS went on an eight-point run.
The energy — and spirit — remained high for the Lady Bruins; Hahn gained two kills and Goff also crushed the ball for a kill of her own, to cut the deficit. There was a constant battle for the rest of the set, with UPS slowly pulling away despite GFU creating rallies. The set ended with a Logger win, 25-14.
When the second set came around, George Fox was the first to score with a kill dealt by Goff. Within the first few rallies of the game, Goff had two more impressive kills to help Fox jump out to a 5-3 lead. Puget Sound, however, stayed constant and proceeded to go on more runs as they took a 21-10 run. The Lady Bruins hit their stride, using a kill from Hahn and two consecutive aces from
Jenna Knibbs to score five straight and force a Logger timeout. After two UPS points, GFU's streak continued with
Gracie Bearden delivering a slamming kill. Following the kill were two blocks: one by Bearden and
Allaire Gilder, and the other by Gilder and
Hannah Huffman. The two blocks prompted a second Logger timeout as the Bruins cut the Logger lead to three, 22-19. The set concluded in favor of the Loggers as they came out of the timeout strong to score the final three points, 25-19.
The third set began much like the first, with a UPS run and a GFU battle. Many players for George Fox created chaos throughout the set. Baer and Goff each dealt kills, while Hahn added another to keep the Bruins close, 8-5. An 8-1 run from the Loggers put the game out of reach for Fox — in their last attempts to rally, Goff and Bearden put points on the board through kills, but the Loggers won the set, 25-12, and the game, 3-0.
