NEWBERG, Ore. – A first-half goal doomed the George Fox women's soccer team, losing to Pacific, 1-0, in a midweek matchup.
How It Happened
The Boxers proved to be a problem for the Bruins right out of the gate, attempting a shot in the second minute of the contest but failing to take an early lead. This didn't deter the Bruins from creating offensive opportunities for themselves.
Isabelle Carrington and
Sarah Burkes struck back in the 15th minute, taking back-to-back shots but unable to get on the board for George Fox — with Burkes nearly putting the ball in with a header that was narrowly saved by a diving Kylie Pascual.
Maci Bowman also attempted a shot for the Bruins but just missed over the top of the crossbar.
An opportunity was found by
Liv Haima in the 30th minute, but the score remained 0–0 after the attempt. Just five minutes later,
Marisa Lam recorded a save on a Boxer shot, but another Pacific player was there to find the back of the net off the deflection. This tipped the score in the Boxers' favor, 1–0.
Tess Scott retaliated with a shot of her own, but couldn't equalize the score before the end of the period.
After 20 minutes of quiet play to start the half,
Alexis Breer started the second half on offense for the Bruins, taking a shot in the 76th minute. The shot was competitive, on target for a low-center goal, but Pascual was there to make the save. Haima was also allowed another attempt but could not level the playing field for the Bruins. Lam and the Bruin defense continued to control the Boxers throughout the half, not allowing the gap to widen and giving the George Fox offense a chance to catch up.
Haima capitalized on one last opportunity in the 84th minute but was unable to raise the score before the final buzzer. Despite a tremendous effort from the Bruins, they were unable to get on the board and fell 1–0.
