Bruins Drop Road Match Against Blues

WALLA WALLA, Wash. — The George Fox women's soccer team fell to the Whitman Blues after a tough competition, 5-0.

How It Happened
In the first few minutes of the contest, Whitman came out with aggression; with a low kick, they were able to score the first goal of the game and gain an early advantage, 1-0. The Blues remained competitive and at nine minutes took a shot, but it was in vain thanks to the Bruins' defense. Shortly after, Whitman shot for another goal — this one headed high right — and this one was successful as it fell to the back of the net to widen the gap in score, 2-0.

George Fox's defense continued to work as the Blues offense continued to be relentless. At almost 16 minutes into the game, Whitman attempted a shot that was saved, but it wasn't long until they tried again; at 22 minutes, the score became a tough 3-0 after a high right shot just out of the Bruins' reach. With the help of Alexis Breer, George Fox's offense got a chance to come alive. As Breer approached the goal, she made a high shot that unfortunately just missed. It would wind up being the Bruins' only shot of the game. The teams continued to battle on the field, but it wasn't until the final minutes of the first half Whitman put in one more goal to further give them the upper hand. The half ended with a score of 4-0 in the Blue's favor.

The start of the second half brought more resilient Bruin defense to combat Whitman's ongoing aggression. Once again, the Blues attempted a shot within the first three minutes, but this time around, freshmen goalkeeper Marisa Lam was there for the save. Lam continued to be a wall for George Fox throughout the remainder of the last half; at 19 minutes in, she saved a ball headed high right and had yet another save at 23 minutes to shut down the Blues' offense. Whitman persisted, however, and within the final minutes of the game, put up one last goal to seal their victory, 5-0.

Top Performances
For offense, Alexis Breer claimed the only shot of the day for George Fox; along with her attempt, Breer also played the entirety of the 90 minute game. Goalkeeper Marisa Lam accomplished three saves to hold them to only one goal scored in the second half compared to the four in the first.

What It Means
Whitman rises to 4-4-9 (3-3-7 NWC) for the overall season, and George Fox is now 0-10-7 (0-9-5 NWC).
