Haima's Early Goal Not Enough in 4-1 Loss to Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. — The George Fox women's soccer team went up against Whitworth in a competitive game that ended in a Bruin loss, 4-1.

How It Happened
Whitworth wasted no time in the first half and was the first to show aggression through their offense. In less than 10 minutes, the Pirates took four shots, but none of them found the net thanks to GFU's defense. It didn't take long for George Fox to retaliate; the Lady Bruins had two consecutive shots at the 10 minute mark. The first — shot by Liv Haima — got unfortunately blocked, but the second — shot by Alexis Breer — was a low center shot that was cut short by the hands of the goalkeeper.

It was only seconds later that Whitworth took possession of the ball and cut through the Bruin's territory to score, 1-0. However, George Fox wasn't going to let them have the lead for long; Breer took a shot at 12 minutes that was blocked, but right behind her was Haima. Haima shot and the ball bounced off the goal post and into the back of the net for a Lady Bruin goal to tie the game 1-1.

The battle between the Pirates and the Bruins continued as Whitworth kept putting pressure through their offense, but George Fox's defense prevailed. Things started to get heated for goalkeeper Marisa Lam at minute 22; Lam saved a high center shot from getting into the net made by WU, but shortly after she was back at it again. The Pirates were awarded a penalty kick, but it couldn't get past the wall Lam made. The game continued to be a back-and-forth with both teams taking shots. For GFU, Sarah Burkes came in and took a shot at 31 minutes in that missed high. In a turn of events, the Pirates ended the first half with a low right goal to widen the gap in the score, 2-1.

Whitworth carried over their fire into the second half with a low center shot only one minute in; fortunately Lam was there for the save, but she had to do another save shortly after for a low center shot. For the Bruins, Aila Villa and Isabella Carrington were keeping things alive on the offensive end by putting pressure on WU. Villa's shot missed right and Carrington's — while it being a good shot — was saved by the Pirates goalkeeper. At 56 minutes in, Whitworth broke through George Fox's defense and made the score 3-1 with another low right goal.

Despite the score, GFU continued to play hard and with spirit. For offense, Breer took a great shot 63 minutes in that the Pirate's goalkeeper stopped from going into the net. Defensively, Lam had two saves: one a low right shot and the other was low left at minute 72. Tensions rose on the field and George Fox got three yellow cards before Whitworth made another goal 80 minutes in. This time, the shot went low right just out of reach for Lam; the Pirates attempted a few more shots, but none of them fell leaving the final score of the game as 4-1.

Top Performances
Liv Haima scored the only goal of the game for the Bruins, while also having two shots. Alexis Breer was just in front of her with three shots. Marisa Lam finished with six saves on the day.
