SPOKANE, Wash. – The George Fox men's soccer team tied 1-1 with Whitworth, using a late goal from
Kilinahe Waring to draw even with one of the top-ranked teams in the NWC.
How It Happened
The Bruin defense was on their heels in the early stages of the game, as Whitworth outshot GFU 7-1 in the first 30 minutes of the game. None of the shots found the back of the net, though, with
Chase Nelson saving two of the balls. In the 38th minute, Whitworth struck first, turning a corner kick into a goal thanks to a header from Jordan Voigt and leaving Fox behind.
Kellin Aguiar attempted to draw the Bruins even too close to half, shooting to the low center, but the ball was saved by Whitworth. The period came to an end, with Fox still down one goal, 1-0.
In a near mirror image to the second half as the first, the Pirates shot left and right to open the period, but none of them resulted in a goal.
Kaimi Victor recorded the first attempted shot after three Whitworth attempts at the 58 minute mark, but his shot was blocked. However, just minutes later, the Bruins had an opportunity — and cashed in.
Following a foul,
Reiker Swenson took the free kick, sending the ball sky-high and to the box. The ball deflected off the hands of the Whitworth goalie and went straight to
Kilinahe Waring, who found himself with an open goal. The Bruin defender knocked in the ball to tie up the score, 1-1.
Various shots were attempted by both teams, with Fox trying hard to get the upper hand, but neither team was successful, and the evening finished off with a tie, 1-1.
