THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- George Fox men's basketball ended their California road swing with a game against the defending national runners-up in New York University, falling behind early and dropping the game, 105-69.
How It Happened
The Bruins fell behind early, finding themselves in a 9-3 deficit within the first few minutes despite a three-pointer by
Jamar Mitchell. The junior followed up with a hook shot, scoring the first five points of the day for George Fox.
Jake Centner halted the Violets' momentum after a considerable run with a layup, but he was unable to deter NYU for long. The Bruins quickly found themselves down, 27–7, against a team that was receiving votes in the D3hoops.com national poll.
Mitchell again found the basket with a jump shot, followed by a three-pointer to help the Bruins regain some ground.
Noah Marte also contributed a three-pointer, and Mitchell added another layup. Marte was on a rampage, driving to the basket and adding two more points to the Bruins' total. Later, he drained two more threes, putting the Bruins back in the race, 40–26.
After the Violets moved ahead yet again,
Anthony Williams found an opportunity to break to the basket, taking advantage of the opening and finishing the layup. Minutes later, he hit a three, adding to the Bruins' total.
Dre Lawrence was awarded a free-throw opportunity, making both shots to put the Bruins at 52–33 at the end of the first half.
NYU drew first blood once again to start the second half, but
Cory Schramm retaliated with an early three. Lawrence earned another trip to the line, once again sinking both shots and following up with a three-pointer.
However, the Violets widened the gap to 93–59 and never looked back. Trey McDonald II drove to the hoop for two more points, and minutes later shook off his defender to drain a three to score the final bucket of the day for Fox in a 105–69 loss.
